API penetration testing

An API can behave correctly for the expected client while accepting requests that the interface never exposes. Wisp Security tests application APIs for teams in India by examining authorization, authentication, and sensitive workflows directly. The goal is to understand what a caller can actually access or change across the agreed endpoints and user roles.

What the assessment covers

Object and function authorization

Check whether one user can access another user's records or perform actions reserved for a different role. Object identifiers and administrative endpoints are assessed in the context of the application's permission model.

Tokens and authentication

Review how credentials and tokens are accepted, scoped, and invalidated. We assess whether protected actions remain available after the relevant session or access should have ended.

Data exposure and input handling

Examine responses and writable properties for unintended access to sensitive fields. Input handling is tested where it could affect data integrity or the backend's interaction with other systems.

Sensitive workflows and integrations

Assess agreed account, invitation, export, and integration flows. Rate-limit or resource-consumption checks are scoped in advance so validation stays within the environment's agreed operational boundaries.

How we test

We map endpoints to roles, objects, and important actions before testing individual requests. API documentation or a request collection improves coverage, but observed client traffic can also help identify the agreed attack surface. OWASP API Security Top 10 guidance is a reference for common failure classes; testing also follows the specific business rules of your application.

What to prepare

  • API base URLs, documentation, OpenAPI files, or request collections where available.
  • Credentials or tokens for each in-scope role, including separate test tenants where relevant.
  • Representative objects and test data that exercise ownership and permission boundaries.
  • Agreed endpoint exclusions, request limits, and third-party integration boundaries.

What you receive

  • Findings identifying the endpoint, request method, affected role, and access prerequisites.
  • Request and response evidence with an explanation of unauthorized access or behavior.
  • Prioritized fixes and a clear account of the API coverage achieved.

Questions about api penetration testing

Is an API pentest included in a web or mobile assessment?
It can be included when the endpoints, roles, and testing permissions are explicitly part of the scope. Naming the API separately prevents an assumption that every backend workflow was covered through the client.
Do you need API documentation?
Documentation or a request collection helps establish coverage. If it is unavailable, we can discuss mapping the relevant endpoints from application behavior and the access your team can provide.
Will API testing disrupt production?
The environment, permitted actions, and request limits are agreed before testing. A representative test environment is useful. Any production testing requires boundaries appropriate to that system.
