Vulnerability assessment vs penetration testing

Vulnerability assessment identifies and prioritizes security weaknesses. Penetration testing investigates whether weaknesses can be used to cross a security boundary and what impact follows. VAPT combines the terms, but a useful engagement still needs a defined application scope, testing depth, and reporting standard.

How VA and PT differ

The activities can overlap. Both can involve tools, manual review, and validation. The practical distinction is the objective and depth agreed for the work, rather than a rule that one is automated and the other is entirely manual.

An application example: access to another customer's data

Imagine an API that returns an invoice for a supplied identifier. A potential access-control issue deserves investigation, but its presence in a request is not enough to establish a vulnerability. Testing needs accounts, invoice ownership, and a clear rule about who should have access.

A penetration test can investigate whether one test account can retrieve an invoice owned by another account or tenant. The resulting evidence should state the required access, the request, the unauthorized response, and the data exposed. This makes the issue easier for engineering to reproduce and prioritize.

What should a VAPT engagement include?

When asking for VAPT services in India, spell out what you expect from vulnerability assessment and penetration testing. The acronym alone does not establish whether authenticated roles, mobile components, APIs, or retesting are included.

  • An inventory of the applications, builds, endpoints, and environments in scope.
  • The account roles, access assumptions, and important workflows to assess.
  • A description of how potential findings will be investigated and validated.
  • Report deliverables covering severity, evidence, remediation, and limitations.
  • Explicit terms for any follow-up testing of fixes.

What to look for in the report

The report should distinguish confirmed findings from unverified observations and explain the conditions needed for each issue. Priorities should reflect the affected data and workflow as well as technical severity. Engineers need enough detail to reproduce the issue and understand the underlying cause.

Coverage matters too. Missing credentials, an unavailable build, or an excluded integration can leave meaningful gaps. A useful report records those limits so a reader does not mistake a partial review for complete product coverage.

Choose the review around your decision

Before a release, you may want focused penetration testing of changed authentication and permissions. For a broader remediation plan, you may need an assessment across several application surfaces. For a customer review, first confirm the scope and deliverables the customer expects.

Wisp Security scopes application assessments around Android apps, web applications, and APIs. Tell us what you are shipping, the access available, and the decision the review should support; we can agree on the appropriate testing and reporting work.
